Governor Abbott Signs TSRA Priority Bills

New Laws Take Effect September 1

Midnight on Sunday was the deadline for Governor Greg Abbott to sign or veto bills passed during the 89th Regular Session of the Texas Legislature. Over the weekend, he signed into law TSRA's six priority bills that state lawmakers sent to his desk:

  • Senate Bill 706 (Universal LTC Recognition by Sen. Charles Schwertner & Rep. Carrie Isaac)
  • Senate Bill 1362 (Anti-Red Flag Act by Sen. Bryan Hughes & Rep. Cole Hefner)
  • Senate Bill 1596 (Repeal State Ban on Short-Barrel Firearms by Sen. Brent Hagenbuch & Rep. Richard Hayes)
  • House Bill 1403 (No Firearms Registry for Foster Parents by Rep. Cody Harris & Sen. Mayes Middleton)
  • House Bill 3053 (End Taxpayer-Funded Gun Buybacks by Rep. Wes Virdell & Sen. Bob Hall)
  • Senate Bill 1718 (NRA Annual Meeting to Texas Program by Sen. Kevin Sparks & Rep. Ryan Guillen)

Each of these new laws will take effect on September 1. Please take a moment to thank Governor Abbott as well as the sponsors of each of these measures for their work to protect and advance our Second Amendment rights in the Lone Star State in 2025!

The governor has announced a special session of the Texas Legislature beginning Monday, July 21, to address a number of non-firearm related bills that were vetoed or issues that were not addressed during the regular session. He controls the agenda of the special session and what topics legislators can consider. TSRA's Legislative Team anticipates some anti-gun bills may be filed by progressive lawmakers during the special session, but those should not be germane to the governor's call.

Thank you, TSRA members, for all your calls and emails in support of these bills during this year's extremely successful legislative session. Your actions make a difference!

The TSRA PAC Legislative Team will continue to monitor the special session and will keep TSRA Members informed as things progress. To contribute to the efforts of the PAC Legislative Team, please visit TSRAPAC.com today.
