In early April, Gun & Trophy Insurance had the distinct privilege of sponsoring the Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA) Youth Hunt at the scenic Mafrige Ranch Bellas Rocas in Carta Valley. Four young hunters and their guardians traveled from across Texas to take part in an unforgettable weekend pursuing wild hogs and Rio Grande turkeys.
Upon arrival, participants were warmly welcomed by the ranch’s exceptional staff and guides, then settled into their cabins before gathering at the nearby lodge for instructions. The afternoon began with a safety briefing and a visit to the range, where the young hunters impressed everyone with their focus, knowledge, and deep respect for their firearms.
With guides assigned and jeeps loaded, the group headed out for an evening hunt. By nightfall, every participant returned to the lodge with a successful harvest and an experience worth sharing. That night, the lodge buzzed with stories and laughter over a hearty enchilada dinner.
Before dawn the next morning, the hunters were back at it – this time pursuing the ever-elusive Rio Grande turkey. As any seasoned hunter knows, turkeys can be unpredictable, and while several close encounters stirred excitement, no ethical shot opportunities presented themselves. Still, the experience was a valuable one, reinforcing both patience and respect for wildlife.
Spending time in camp with these young hunters was a meaningful reminder of the lasting value of mentorship, stewardship, and tradition. Opportunities like these are about more than the hunt – they’re about passing on the responsibility and joy of ethical hunting to the next generation.
